Senior Designer / Project Manager

Job Summary:

This Senior Designer / Project Manager role is responsible for overseeing the design through fabrication process custom wall framing systems and building façades.  This includes; planning, directing, and coordinating activities of designated projects to ensure that goals or objectives are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and budget parameters. The work will be performed in an office setting and includes leading and working within a team comprised of account managers, estimators, design technologists, project coordinators, production personnel, customers, outside suppliers, and others, to facilitate the proper execution of awarded projects.

The Senior Designer / Project Manager is responsible for executing project tasks including 3D modeling, 2D drawing generation, framing system coordination, converting design data to fabrication data, and providing installation instructions under the direction of the Design Manager.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan the project

  • Define the scope of the project in collaboration with estimating, senior management, and designers as appropriate
  • Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion and create a detailed work plan which sets priorities and identifies as well as sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project
  • Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities and review with appropriate staff and other project constituents; revisit the schedule as required

 Implement the project

  •  Effectively manage the design process to ensure that the project deliverables are on

time, within budget and at the required level of quality

o   Understand Design Intent

o   Develop Constructible Solutions / 3D modeling complete systems

o   Export Data for Fabrication

o   Provide Clear Installation Instructions and Coordinate On-Site Installation

o   Properly Schedule Project Deliverables

o   Learn from Past Projects

o   Participate in a Collaborative Process

  •  Manage customer expectations on schedule, budget, scope, and resolving issues.
  •  Positively influence others to execute the project plan and achieve results that are in the best interest of the project, organization, and customer
  • Monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities
  • Process pay applications for all project phases and supply to accounting
  • Ensure that all project information and activities are appropriately documented and secured
  • Delegate project tasks based on staff members’ individual strengths, skill sets and experience levels
  • Coordinate fabrication work into production

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Professional Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or Fabrication related fields, or 5+ years of relevant work experience

Required Abilities and Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • 5+ years of GC experience in Project Management or Construction Management.
  • A deep understanding of architectural drawings.
  • Depth of knowledge in construction materials and sequencing on job-sites.
  • Deep understanding of construction and manufacturing contracts.
  • Ability to confidently trouble shoot scheduling, constructability, and money issues with clients.
  • Familiarity in 2D and 3D modeling software, or ability and interest in learning (no experience required…training and mentorship provided with established 3D modeling training systems in place)
  • Familiarity with MS Office including Excel, and PDF editing software (Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat Pro)

Bonus Attributes:

  • Proficiency with Rhino and automation tools
  • Experience with fabrication, construction, or structural engineering concepts

Salary range 80k-100k+ depending on experience and interview.

  • Performs quality assurance/control operator spot checks throughout the shift.

  • Responsible for continuing compliance to calibration requirements in assigned areas.

  • Responsible for maintaining control of nonconforming products. Notifies proper parties for initial

  • disposition and enter the part(s) as a nonconformance in the ERP/MRP system.

  • Troubleshoot advanced machine problems including machine crashing.

  • Provide interpretation and guidance to employees including advanced problem-solving techniques.

  • Coordinate machine maintenance and repair with maintenance personnel.

  • Using computer integrated manufacturing application to processes direct labor utilization report, run rate

  • data, efficiency reports, priority dispatch report, part optimization, timecards, and monitors schedules.

  • Coaches and performs on the job training to direct reports.

  • Attend leadership team meetings.

  • Maintains an organized, clean and safe environment and maintains 5 “S” standards.

  • Complies with safety rules including PPE and OSHA standards.

  • Coordinates Lean initiatives with management resulting in the elimination of wastes including overproduction, defects, transportation, waiting, inventory, motion and over-processing.

  • Knowledge of quality at the source techniques, root cause analysis, corrective action, continuous improvement, lean and six sigma.

Required Skills and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • At least 5 years of experience in a combined production and leadership role in the high precision machining industry

  • Proficient reading, writing, oral communication, and comprehension in English language. 

  • Knowledge and working experience with MS Office, (Word, Excel, Power-Point, Project), CAD/CAM. 

  • Knowledge of computer integrated manufacturing software including accessing and retrieving information using the computer. 

  • Ability to identify and evaluate complex, ambiguous business problems or technical issues and provide well thought out solutions.  Proven problem solver who can build consensus and move the team to improvement.

  • Ability to quickly grasp the complexities of disparate quality issues and assist staff in solving technical issues to effectively meet customer needs.

  • Ability to interpret data charts, trends, and goal setting measurements.

Additional Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing or industrial engineering or related discipline

  • AS9100 experience

  • Knowledge of ERP software, PDM software (Vantage, SharePoint)

  • Six Sigma Green Belt is highly desirable

    • Oversee quality assurance processes during fabrication and installation.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in project management, specifically in architectural metals, metal fabrication, or a related industry.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of metal materials, finishes, and fabrication techniques.
  • Proficiency in project management tools such as Excel, Trello, Procore, or equivalent software.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.

Preferred Skills:

  • Certification in Project Management (PMP) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with CAD software or other design tools.
